PREPARING FOR YOUR NEW FENCE

We at Olympus can help with any permitting paperwork needed, but as a homeowner it is still good to know the general rules. This usually means a calling your town’s building/Zoning department. And if you are part of a Homeowners Association (HOA) it can also mean getting additional permission.

Here are some questions to ask your Town’s Building Department:

  • Do I need a permit to install a fence?

  • What is the highest fence I can install in the front or back of my property?

  • How close to the property line can I install the fence?

  • What side of the fence should face my neighbor?

It is also important to understand the time required to process permit applications can vary which may impact the timing of your project. Also, if you are part of a HOA, they will usually only work with the homeowner. But rest assured, we can provide all the documentation you will need, such as project specifications and insurance information.

Lastly, it is important to know where you want your fence built. If you would like it on the property line, we strongly encourage a property survey be done. The money spent on a survey is far less than the amount it will cost to have your fence removed and re-installed somewhere else.
